Roscoe’s Featured Friend of the Month: Astro

back to blog

As we head into the dog days of summer we’re reminded that with a new month comes a new Featured Friend. August, therefore, is the perfect time to introduce Astro! Astro is a five-and-a-half year old Black Labrador mix (with possibly some German Shepherd!) who has been a part of the Roscoe’s family since back in May of 2019. We have watched this handsome guy grow from a young, goofy pup to an adult, goofy dog and we couldn’t be more excited to share Astro’s story with you!

Astro as an adorable, little puppy!

Like many rescue pups, Astro was born across the country in Mississippi before he was transported to Maine for adoption. Once there, Astro, who was originally named Rue, went up online through Passion for Pets Rescue and waited for his perfect new family to find him. Luckily for him, his soon-to-be mom was already looking for him as well! Once she spotted Astro’s photo online, she knew she had to see him and was able to arrange a meeting with his foster parents. The day arrived, Astro’s mom drove to see him, and we assume you can guess the rest… they both fell in love instantly! Astro was only nine pounds when he drove home with his new mom to Portland to start their life together, and now this big boy is tipping the scales at almost 90! He sure has come a long way!

Astro’s mom remembers that the first couple months together with her new puppy was hard because he was diagnosed with an intestinal issue. She was up with him a lot in the night and she often worried about his weight. Once it was treated however, Astro began playing like a puppy, gaining weight, and sleeping through the night so he could grow big and strong. Nowadays, that seems like a distant memory as Astro is one of the spunkiest, most playful, and largest dogs we know! In his free time, Astro is a true Indiana Jones as he loves to bury, dig up, and then chew on his marrow bones. He also has a passion for all things that bounce, whether it be a tennis ball, squeaky ball, or the like. He’s a true Lab for sure! And despite being born in the southern state of Mississippi, Astro loves living here in Maine for all the change of seasons. He swims in the ocean, hikes in the woods, runs on the beach, and romps through the snow. There’s always fun to be had when you’re as carefree and playful as Astro!

Astro at the beach. What a photogenic pup!

Luckily for us, Astro carries that carefree nature with him to Roscoe’s. He always has a huge smile on his face when he walks through the door and despite his size, Astro makes friends with everyone, big and small! Astro is super playful and bouncy so he usually finds himself in the active group where he can chase, wrestle, and play his favorite game in the world: fetch! Astro has also spent many sleepovers with us and he is such a slumber party star. From snoring to wiggling his whole butt for breakfast, Astro is always a joy to have around and we love, love, love when he comes to visit. It’s been a privilege to watch Astro grow and we can’t wait to see where life takes this big, handsome lug! Always stay your true, happy self, Astro!
