We all love to give our dogs a snack now and then from the human table because, let’s be honest, who can resist those puppy dog eyes? However, it’s always important to be aware of which foods are actually safe for our furry friends to consume. While some of the most common human foods can be quite toxic to our pups, others have the opposite effect and can actually help to keep your dog healthy and happy. So, which foods are safe for Fido? Well, we’ve compiled a helpful list of some of the healthiest to get you started off on the right paw!

1. Carrots 
Carrots are one of the best vegetables you can offer your dog because they’re healthy, tasty, and can help fight plaque! Carrots are full of Vitamin A, which boosts the immune system, as well as the provitamin beta-carotene, which helps support eye health and prevents common eye diseases. On top of this, carrots are full of fiber, which is good for digestion, and their hard, crunchy nature helps to scrape plaque off your dog’s teeth as they chew. Plus, carrots are quite sweet and many dogs find them naturally delicious!

2. Green Beans 
Another common vegetable that’s great for dogs is the green bean. Vitamins A, C, and K are all present in green beans, as well as high quantities of fiber, protein and iron. While all these vitamins and minerals do a plethora of good things for your pup, some of the best are promoting a healthy blood composition, boosting the immune system, and improving the strength of your dog’s muscles and bones. What a strong, little bean! Green beans are also low in sugars and fats and are therefore a great alternative to common dog treats. They can regularly be given as a snack or sprinkled over food.

3. Eggs 
Most dogs will be excited about this one! Eggs are a great snack to feed our canine companions because they’re high in things such as protein and calcium, both of which help build muscle, strengthen bones, and aid in healthy hair growth and tissue repair. The yolk of an egg also contains biotin, which is a vitamin that aids in cellular growth and muscle formation. Even the shell of an egg is good for your pup as it’s mainly made up of calcium and phosphorus, which has the unique ability to help your dog’s body use fats and carbohydrates more efficiently. Plus, eggs can be served to your dog raw!

4. Yogurt 
It might surprise you, but yogurt can be quite beneficial for your pup. This simple dairy product is high in calcium which, as we’ve mentioned before, is great for strengthening your dog’s teeth and bones. Perhaps more beneficial, though, is it’s naturally occurring probiotics. Probiotics are a strain of healthy bacteria that aid in the digestion of food, help fight off infections and can improve the look and feel of your dog’s skin and fur. Plus, probiotics have been shown to reduce stinky dog breath! It’s important to note, however, that yogurts with added sweeteners, flavors or dyes should be avoided. Plain yogurt with active, live cultures is the best way to go!

5. Chicken
When served properly, boneless, un-seasoned chicken can be a great health food to feed to your dog. Chicken is a source of lean protein which will keep your dog active and full of energy while also helping to build muscle. Chicken also contains the Omega 6 fatty acids, including Omega 3, which will ensure your pup has a shiny and smooth coat. Glucosamine, a type of amino acid, is also specifically found in chicken and is known to promote healthy bones. Plus, what dog doesn’t like chicken? That being said, it’s important to note that chicken is a common dog allergy, so always consult your vet first.

6. Sweet Potatoes 
If you’re looking for a delicious and nutritious treat for your dog, sweet potatoes might just be it! Cooked sweet potatoes are an excellent source of dietary fiber, which helps the digestive system function more efficiently and might aid some pups in having more regular bowel movements. Eating fiber on a regular basis also lowers the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancers in our pups. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamins A, B6, and C, and are rich in calcium, potassium, and iron. Plus, they’re low in fat and are naturally sweet!

7. Oatmeal 
Like a lot of foods on this list, oatmeal is great for dogs because of its fiber content. Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber which can regulate blood glucose levels as well as help with irregular bowel movements. Oatmeal is also a great carbohydrate alternative to those pups who might be sensitive to wheat or grains. It’s important, however, to only serve your dog cooked oatmeal and to not sprinkle it raw over their food. Prepare the oatmeal with water, not milk, and leave it undressed with no added sugars or flavors. Oatmeal can also be baked into dog-friendly cookies as a healthy treat!

8. Peanut Butter
One of the most popular human treats we give our pups is peanut butter, and it might be a relief to know that it’s quite healthy for them! While high in fat, plain, unsalted and untreated peanut butter is a great source of protein and Vitamin B. Niacin, specifically, promotes proper circulation and contributes to a dog’s healthy coat and skin. Peanut butter also contains potassium, which helps regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signals. Plus, it’s super tasty! Most dogs don’t need a lot of it to be beneficial, however, and should only have about a tablespoon at a time.
